Don’t you hate it when other people are right?.. only half kidding 😉
Today we’re chatting healthy habits everyone talks about.. that actually work. If you’ve dipped your toes into “healthy girl” culture you’ve probably stumbled across motivational reels that show snippets of daily wellness routines or, my personal fave, the POV reel. These are meant to showcase how “healthy girls” structure their day-to-day and give you aspirational content to then implement into your daily life.
Ok. Challenge accepted.
Since the beginning of 2023 I’ve been on a wellness journey. I’ve been focusing on creating a balanced lifestyle that breathes inner joy and well-being into my day-to-day. So, I took to social media and adopted some of the most popular “healthy girl” habits I see talked about over and over again. I listened to numerous podcasts, read books by nutritionists and “experts” in the field, and followed content creators that aligned with how I wanted to honor my body and mind. I then, slowly, started shifting my daily habits to incorporate new ones and today, I’m sharing the shifts that have truly made a difference.
Remember, this is about a year in the making so I want to preface this by saying that I’m still a newbie. I’m truly on this journey with you and I’m sharing things in real time so, let’s approach this with grace. Everything I’m about to mention I made sure could be sustainable on my end and represented something I felt was an area of my life I was ready to elevate and enrich with “better-for-me” habits.
Ready to dive in? Let’s do it.
Audit groceries
Let’s get one thing straight: I’m a real girl who enjoys food. Deprivation has never and will never be the name of my game. But deep down, I knew the food I was consuming was probably not the best for me in terms of nutrients.
So instead of taking things away, I started looking at the things I consume most and swapped them for healthier options; things like my coffee creamer, the beef we use, condiments, all didn’t have to be taken away, but could be swapped for better options.
This change is a privilege and sometimes just not possible, but if you can, it can be a game-changer. I really do feel better because the food I consume is real, nutrient-dense food. Now, am I “perfect” in this approach? No. I follow the 80/20 rule. I don’t obsess over getting it right all the time but I am aware of the times I can be disciplined without feeling like I’m taking away the joy of eating. This takes time – and a lot of research – but I promise it’s something that will make a difference and a habit worth adopting.
Walk as much as possible
Hot girl walks are IT. They really are. The benefits are countless and you will see and feel a difference. During 75 Hard when I was consistently walking 45 minutes a day, I felt the most mental clarity. Digestion was also great and I felt less puffy and “leaner.” I always recommend people start with walks if movement is not part of their daily life because it’s simple, free, and you’ll quickly start to see the benefits.
Weight Lifting
Building muscle is essential for longevity. Equating lifting weights with the ability to play with my future grandchildren, putting on my clothes when I’m older, and lifting my grocery bags really helped with understand the importance of incorporating weights as a benefit for my future self. Aesthetics almost becomes secondary when you consider how important it is to build muscle. I’m so glad the narrative around women lifting weights is shifting and the benefits are more commonly highlighted in mainstream media.
Hot lemon water before other food & drinks
There’s a ton of hype behind the benefits of hot lemon water in the morning and when you dig deep, some of them are just that, hype. But what I will say is starting my day with this simple “healthy” habit almost always snowballs into more healthy choices throughout the day.. kinda like making your bed in the morning. It almost tricks me into starting a string of healthy choices and sets the tone for the rest of the day. I’ve also now evolved to making hot lemon ginger turmeric water because the benefits of ginger and turmeric are incredible and they’re not typical ingredients I would consume regularly.
Let me know what you think of these “healthy” habits and what you would add to this list.
Until my next one.
